Hero Portraits
RECESS ACTIVITIES:
Red light, Green light!
‘YES AND” Activity:
The goal and intention of this activity is to have the students learn how to build off of each other's ideas, and to become more accepting in group creating environments. It is expected that most of our kiddos have passionate ideas and want to execute them in their own way. This activity opens their minds in completing a story. This activity will also serve as a reminder of our classroom agreements.
This activity is a version of “complete the story” where students say a sentence starting with “Yes and” or just yes also works.
Example:
Lily- I went to the grocery store and
Goes to the next person in the circle
Ryan- I decided to get a pack of cookies and
Teachers, our goal is to not only remind our students of our agreements, such as not speaking when another person is speaking, but to also regulate the responses of our students. Ensure that no one says anything inappropriate as well as make their sentences too long. This week instead of sitting in a circle, students will stand in a circle. Whoever is adding a sentence, they need to step in the center and act out what they are saying. Each person does this. Encourage students to recall or reiterate what a fellow student has said. We will limit this activity to 2 rounds this time.
Group one: Victoria & Stephany | Group Two: Ryan & Lily | Cam will document.
The goal is to have at least 2 rounds/most 3, each round ends when everyone has gone. Once every student has gone and said their story, the teachers repeat what the story was. Between the rounds, ask the students if they want to add more to this story. If they say no, we can end the activity there. The end of this activity, teachers ask/guide with the following questions:
-
What did you guys like about that activity?
-
Did you like where the story went? Why or why not?
-
How can we come to an agreement with how the story ends?
After this the kids will sit down and they will watch the presentation.
During this presentation I will have examples that will be used for demonstrations. For this I would love for two teachers to come up and help me out, and the other two will supervise any children who may not be paying attention. The goal is to have them START their project with the portrait of someone they know in black and white. I will be giving them a worksheet to fill.
THE WORK SHEET: this work sheet will document their planning before executing their portrait. They will write down who they are drawing, why they are drawing this person, and what they love about this person. Each teacher will be responsible in documenting any responses that is not on the sheet. Our kids have a hard time spelling, so I encourage recording your conversations with them either through writing or a voice recording app.
Once they finish their worksheets, students will start their black and white portraits. The goal is to have them draw this portrait with enough negative space to cut them out. Teachers with younger students, please ensure that they are able to cut this properly by demonstrating and leading the cutting process. Students need to draw their portraits first BEFORE cutting anything. When they are ready to cut, provide a demonstration and supervise them.
Victoria + Stephany : 1st Grade Table: Encourage this table to practice their motor skills of cutting and pasting. Demonstrate how you can use both collage and drawing on this sheet. Much like victoria’s lesson, think BIG. These students love characters and are inspired by them, so if the prompts are falling through, ask them how they feel when their characters are feeling this way.
Ryan + Lily: 1st + 2nd Grade Table: Encourage this table to practice their motor skills of cutting and pasting. Demonstrate how you can use both collage and drawing on this sheet. Much like Victoria's lesson, think BIG. Prompt students with questions about how they feel when they see their mom/dad feeling this emotion. How can they represent how their loved one feels?
Cam: 3rd Grade Table: Challenge this table with different textures and patterns, as well as using collage.
Based on how Monday goes, I will adjust the Wednesday plan accordingly.

After recess, students will be seated in their assigned seats for snack time. Once they are done, students will be instructed to come to the front of the class for a rundown of today’s lesson.
For half of today’s class, students will work on the backdrop. Before this class, I will be making the backdrop have a tree shape on it but it will be completely blank. Students will come and work together to paint this tree and to add elements they think is appropriate for this tree. The intention is to have the students take their portraits and add them to the tree branches as leaves. This tree will be known as our community tree. This community tree is to symbolize the growth in our communities, and their heroes are what make this tree beautiful.

The second half of class we will be finishing our portraits, if our students are being very resistant to the idea we can have them add onto the backdrop more OR finishing last weeks activity.
